Letter to future WI Governor – July 2026

Faith in Place is a multifaith organization of Midwest clergy working toward environmental justice. Madison Monthly Meeting is one of the signees of the following letter.

Dear Future Governor,

At the heart of many of our current struggles is the question of how we treat one another and our shared home. The natural world is a sacred trust, passed down to us and through us to every generation that follows, providing shelter, food, water, and the joy of living in one of the most beautiful states in the nation.

That inheritance is under threat. Our current extractive economy pulls fossil fuels from the ground and burns them, and the cost is too high. This extraction costs us in dollars and cents, with high energy bills and skyrocketing insurance rates. It costs us in the health and well-being of our families, especially children with vulnerable lungs. It costs us in homes and buildings, roads and bridges, all damaged by increasingly frequent and extreme weather. It costs us in air quality, in days lost outdoors on our lakes and trails, in the forests and fields that make Wisconsin home.

A just transition to less expensive, 100% renewable energy is the solution before us. Making the transition thoughtfully and equitably will mean healthier communities, more resilient local economies, homegrown energy independence, and energy costs that families can actually afford.

We believe an economy that serves the health and well-being of all people, as well as our common home, is not only good but possible. All Wisconsinites deserve the dignity of an affordable life, where the basic conditions of health and joy are within reach, not priced out of access.

We are, each of us, rooted in our traditions, and we do not take the challenges that come with change lightly. But we also know that, across every tradition we represent, there are moments in history that call for courage and vision.

We call on you, as Wisconsin’s next Governor, to be that courageous and visionary leader. Commit to a just transition to 100% renewable energy. Walk with us toward the future that Wisconsin deserves.
