Statement of support for the People’s Climate March
Statement of support for the People’s Climate March
We, the Madison Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, note with joy and gratitude the gathering of thousands of people to march in New York City on September 21, 2014, on the occasion of the United Nations Climate Summit. The marchers will be urging the worlds’ governments to vigorously and effectively address the climate catastrophe that has been unleashed in the planet.
We are profoundly aware of the pain that climate change is already inflicting on millions of people around the globe, impacting with particular destructiveness the most vulnerable among us, in the poorest countries and regions of the world. As Quakers, we are called to work for peace and justice worldwide, and seek to address the conditions that undermine them. We, then, see ourselves under the weight of a solemn responsibility to join and support local and global efforts to protect our environment and safeguard a future of peace and security for all.
We affirm our unity with the world’s peoples’ dream for a healthier world, and express our heartfelt support for the planned mobilization of concerned citizens in New York City – and the simultaneous mobilization of many more in every continent – for the Global People’s Climate March on September 21. We lovingly encourage our members and attenders, as well as people everywhere, to participate and further consider ways to actively advance this most important cause.
Adopted by Madison Monthly Meeting, September 7, 2014.
