AR QUIZ ANSWER

  • August 4, 1964 was the date that the bodies of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, Civil Rights activists and voting rights advocates, were discovered buried under a small dam near Philadelphia, MS.  They had been murdered by members of the Ku Klux Klan on June 21st. For more on these murders, go to Wikipedia, Murders of Chaney, Schwerner and Goodman.

Bob Newbery writes: I had already returned from my voter registration work in Clarksdale, MS in June and July of that year, but part of me remained in Mississippi–and still does! One thing I learned from participation in the Mississippi Freedom Summer was that progress needs more than good intentions.
